{"id":20014,"date":"2024-11-21T12:29:32","date_gmt":"2024-11-21T17:29:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idcanada.org\/?p=20014"},"modified":"2024-11-21T12:29:32","modified_gmt":"2024-11-21T17:29:32","slug":"celebrating-idc-2024-design-symposium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/idcanada.org\/fr\/celebrating-idc-2024-design-symposium\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating IDC\u2019s 2024 Design Symposium"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>IDC members and industry leaders from across North America gathered at The Rec Room, located in the historic Roundhouse, in Toronto, Ont. on Nov. 6 and 7 to learn, engage, and network at the 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/idcanada.org\/symposium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IDC Design Symposium<\/a> \u2013 \u2018Canadian Design at Home and Around the World.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The event was an opportunity for participants from the design and architecture community across Canada to learn together, connect, and network.<\/p>\n<p>The symposium was made possible by the generous support from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benjaminmoore.com\/en-ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Benjamin Moore<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ciot.com\/toronto_en\/\">Neolith + Ciot<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teknion.com\/ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Teknion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Participants attended design tours, collected IDCEC credits through panel discussions, heard from incredible speakers, and celebrated the best of interior design at the IDC Awards Celebration, featuring the prestigious Value of Design Awards (VODA).<\/p>\n<p>Highlights of the IDC Design Symposium include:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Captivating Design Tours<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20016\" src=\"https:\/\/idcanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/2024-Design-Symposium-design-tour-Waterworks-Food-Hall-e1732157928672.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"749\" height=\"487\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Participants were provided the opportunity to join two Design Symposium tours.<\/p>\n<p>IDC joined forces with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.retaildesigninstitute.org\/canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Retail Design Institute Canada<\/a> to coordinate a design tour of the Waterworks Food Hall to learn more about the redesign process of this historic market through the lead of the project&rsquo;s interior designers.<\/p>\n<p>Exclusive to Design Symposium attendees, \u2018Dine with the Designer\u2019 at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denizens.ca\/florette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Florette<\/a> restaurant provided a unique opportunity to enjoy great food and company while experiencing first-hand the work of IDC member Dyonne Fashina of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denizens.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Denizens of Design<\/a> who provided insights on the design process throughout the meal.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Two Incredible Keynotes<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20028\" style=\"width: 760px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20028\" class=\"wp-image-20028\" src=\"https:\/\/idcanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/IDC-Summit-2024_Day-1_-Rec-Room_Toronto_11-06-2024_Nick-Wons-2745-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20028\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Nick Wons<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This year\u2019s keynotes provided captivating presentations; their stories and future-oriented topics inspired and educated.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/idcanada.org\/learn-about-ai-and-the-future-of-design-at-the-idc-design-symposium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dwayne Matthews<\/a>, an education strategist and innovation evangelist creating future-focused learning experiences, explored how AI is transforming interior design, education, and the world around us.<\/p>\n<p>Prolific and visionary architect, <a href=\"https:\/\/idcanada.org\/idc-design-symposium-tackles-the-psychology-of-healthy-buildings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tye Farrow<\/a>, explained the effects of built environments on our well-being and discussed ways in which we can construct healthy buildings.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Four Engaging Expert Panel Discussions<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20031\" style=\"width: 760px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20031\" class=\"wp-image-20031\" src=\"https:\/\/idcanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/IDC-Summit-2024_Day-1_-Rec-Room_Toronto_11-06-2024_Nick-Wons-0802-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20031\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Nick Wons<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The panel \u00ab\u00a0Working with Canadian Makers\u00a0\u00bb centered on how Canadian makers and design professionals can integrate their practices. Moderator Joel Berman, a renowned glass artist, product designer, and President of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joelberman.design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joel Berman Design<\/a>, and panelists Kate MacNeill, Owner and Founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/thisisconcord.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Concord<\/a>, a Toronto-based lighting design and manufacturing studio, and Peter Coolican, Founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coolicanandcompany.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coolican &amp; Company<\/a>, a small-batch design and production studio, shared their experiences and advice as it relates to processes for new makers to grow and the many pathways to success.<\/p>\n<p>The second panel, \u00ab\u00a0Canadian Chic &amp; Color Palettes: Celebrating Design from Cottage Charm to Urban Sophistication,\u00a0\u00bb was presented by Benjamin Moore, who also announced their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.benjaminmoore.com\/en-ca\/paint-colours\/colour-of-the-year-2025?gad_source=1&amp;gclid=EAIaIQobChMI0KaFu8bsiQMVOG5HAR1i2y3cEAAYASAAEgL8OvD_BwE&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2025 Colour of the Year<\/a>, Cinnamon Slate 2113-40. Joining Benjamin Moore&rsquo;s Sharon Grech were design luminaries <a href=\"https:\/\/www.douglasdesignstudio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeffrey Douglas<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/samsacksdesign.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sam Sacks<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colettevandenthillart.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colette van den Thillart<\/a> who discussed what it means to be Canadian Chic and how the Canadian culture and landscape have impacted their designs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ojiibik.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ojiibik<\/a> Co-Founder and Vice President of Sales, Chris Lefebvre and Magnolia Perron, Indigenous Women and Youth Program Manager at the <a href=\"https:\/\/nacca.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Aboriginal Capital Corporations Association (NACCA)<\/a>, led a workshop on the meaning of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission 94 Calls to Action and how they can be used by professionals on their journeys of reconciliation to implement meaningful practices.<\/p>\n<p>Day two of the Design Symposium kicked off with a \u2018fireside chat\u2019 by Teknion on the role of empathy in today\u2019s workplace. Tracy Wymer, Teknion\u2019s Vice President of Insights &amp; Inspiration and Jade Franklin, Teknion\u2019s Vice President of Architecture &amp; Design were joined by Chantal Frenette of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmoser.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M Moser Associates<\/a> and Michael Inzlicht, PhD, Professor of Psychology at the University of Toronto and Founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/michaelinzlicht.com\/lab-view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Work and Play Lab<\/a>, to discuss valuable insights from both clinical and design perspectives on how designers can cultivate new empathic rituals in their work and lives.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Three Enlightening Presentations<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20036\" style=\"width: 760px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20036\" class=\"wp-image-20036\" src=\"https:\/\/idcanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/IDC-Summit-2024_Day-2_-Rec-Room-Carlu_Toronto_11-07-2024_Nick-Wons-2118-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20036\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Nick Wons<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As cities around the world continue to struggle with rising office vacancy rates, and an alarming lack of affordable housing, office-to-residential conversions stand out as a realistic method to form part of the solution. In &lsquo;From Vacancy to Vibrancy,&rsquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gensler.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gensler&rsquo;s<\/a> Duanne Render made the case for conversion by using real project examples and research to propose how Gensler&rsquo;s algorithm to determine which properties make for a suitable conversion candidate stand out as a realistic method to form part of the solution.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.materialbank.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Material Bank&rsquo;s<\/a> Rebecca Best presented two insightful presentations. The Awards Celebration presented the 2024 Value of Design Awards (VODA), the Industry Partners-exclusive Innovation Awards, the Innovation in Design Thinking Student Competition, and the Legacy Award for Distinguished Service. <a href=\"https:\/\/idcanada.org\/idc-honours-winners-at-2024-awards-celebration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">See this year&rsquo;s winning projects<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Connections at Annual General Meeting<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20019 \" src=\"https:\/\/idcanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/2024-Design-Symposium-Annual-General-Meeting-AGM-wide-shot-e1732158301333.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"465\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The 52nd Annual General Meeting was held on Nov. 5 at Le Germain Hotel Toronto Maple Leaf Square in Toronto where members heard a report on IDC\u2019s activities over the past year.<\/p>\n<p>A new IDC President and Vice President were elected to the IDC Board of Directors and one new Board member was appointed. <a href=\"https:\/\/idcanada.org\/meet-the-2024-2025-idc-board-of-directors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meet the new Board<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The 2024 IDC Design Symposium brought together participants from the design and architecture community across Canada to explore the crucial role of design in shaping a productive, healthy, and inclusive society. The event encouraged collaboration, inclusion, growth, and opportunity.
